RUNNER’S NEW YEARS

Posted on

I have been a marathoner half my life. For the past three decades I’ve welcomed each New Year’s morning with a long run. Only runners would view this as a positive thing. It does, however, give me pause to reflect on the past year and what the next one may hold in store.

As I was considering how the scars from 2016 may have blighted our prospects for a profitable 2017, it dawned on me how wrongheaded my thinking was. In runners’ parlance, the New Year is not a series of sprints to be won or lost. Rather, it is a distance event in which the completion by all participants is the overarching objective.

Sure, there is prize money for the winners. But, only a few out of thousands of participants get any of that. The rest of us try only to do our best and to help other runners do the same.

When the gun sounds for a marathon, in the field there are no liberals or conservatives, no rich or poor, only runners struggling together for the finish line.

How nice would it be if, in 2017, all people acted like distance runners with one common goal?

To reach the finish line with grace and dignity.
